Fired-up female founders were treated to an additional spark of inspiration at last month’s Electrify Aotearoa, with a special New Zealand premiere of Show Her The Money, the award-winning documentary film taking the VC world by storm.

Created by Catherine Gray, an LA-based award-winning producer, author, TEDx speaker, podcast host and Angel Investor, the film is fast becoming a transformative tool for women entrepreneurs, addressing head-on how women are getting less than 2% of venture capital funding while also demystifying what it is.

“Money is power and women need it to achieve true equality,” Gray says. “I’m thrilled to have been able to get in front of a Kiwi audience to share this story. Women have always been responsible for innovations that have changed the world and we need a world where investors ‘show her the money’ to help make more a reality.”

With the help of a talented director and editor, the film follows four visionary US entrepreneurs as they endure uphill battles to turn their ideas into reality. The stories are resonating with women around the world, including New Zealand, emphasising the urgent need for women to be more involved in venture capital by showcasing just how unfairly skewed the current system is.

The film aims to educate and inspire women to take control of their financial futures and invest in innovations that will shape the future. Gray is especially proud of how Show Her The Money is fast becoming a powerful educational tool, revealing that venture capital isn’t just for millionaires.

“Once women see the film and understand that venture capital is fascinating, exciting, fun and lucrative, they want to be a part of it,” Gray emphasised. “Women, including c-suite executives and those inheriting wealth, can start investing with as little as $25,000.”

“I believe it’s film and television that helps change culture,” says Gray. “Awareness creates change and this is a story that’s never been told that needs to be.”

Gray has chosen grassroots screenings of the film over an immediate online release so she could get in front of her audience, prioritise in-person discussion, and facilitate real-life Q&A sessions. Initially planned as a 50-city tour, critical acclaim and overwhelming demand has already seen it expand to 100 cities with an eye to starting a global conversation.

By November, the film will be available on a pay-per-view basis through Kinema, partnering with large corporations and membership organisations.

“This is more than a film; it’s a movement to empower women and show them that venture capital is accessible. We need women to be more active in this world so we can change the world”.
